Starlink Mobile and Entel Switch On Emergency SMS During Chile’s Winter Storm

Satellite-to-phone service stops sounding futuristic the moment a storm knocks out the power and someone still needs to tell family they are safe.

Starlink Mobile and Entel have switched on emergency Direct to Cell SMS service in Chile, covering a long stretch of the country from the Atacama Region through Los Lagos as a severe winter storm continues.

The announcement has already moved beyond a promise about what satellite connectivity may do someday. A live backup is being offered to impacted Entel customers while an active emergency puts normal infrastructure under tremendous pressure.

Entel says the emergency activation gives customers another way to communicate when they need it most. The satellite link is a fallback for places where terrestrial mobile coverage is unavailable, not a replacement for the carrier’s regular network.

Entel explains that the service works with a compatible, updated phone and an eligible plan. Customers need roaming and VoLTE enabled, along with a reasonably clear view of the sky so the handset can connect directly to a Starlink satellite when the ground network cannot be reached.

The carrier’s support page says the satellite layer can handle SMS and a limited group of compatible applications, including WhatsApp, Google Maps, Apple Maps, X and AccuWeather. Normal cellular calls and general web browsing are not available through the satellite connection.

No special satellite phone or Starlink dish is required. The point is to give an ordinary compatible phone one more path to the outside world, with a short message as the essential emergency tool.

The official storm picture shows why that modest-sounding capability can matter so much. In its July 18 morning update, SENAPRED described intense rain, flooding and mass-movement risks across multiple regions as emergency crews, police, firefighters and military personnel worked in affected communities.

At 8 a.m. that morning, the agency reported four deaths, six injuries, 800 people in shelters and more than 367,000 electricity customers without service. Those figures belong to that specific morning balance, not a final count for the storm.

The power outages do not prove mobile coverage disappeared everywhere, and the emergency satellite activation should not be read that way. They do show how quickly severe weather can strain everyday infrastructure across a wide area.

SENAPRED also said Chile’s SAE emergency-alert system had been used 41 times since the emergency began July 14. The meteorological alarm for the Coquimbo Region was extended through Tuesday, July 21, underscoring that this was still a developing event.

A working text message does not repair a power line or reopen a flooded road. It can still let a stranded person share a location, confirm that a child is safe or tell relatives that help has arrived.

That is why Entel urged customers to keep phones charged, turn on battery-saving settings and prioritize SMS or messaging during an emergency. The carrier also advised checking roaming and VoLTE before trouble arrives, because both are needed for its Direct to Cell service.

The advice is practical: conserve the battery, send a short message instead of making a long call and seek a clear view of the sky only when conditions make that safe. Buildings, terrain and severe weather can still affect satellite availability.

Entel also recommends checking that a phone can receive Chile’s SAE emergency alerts and keeping an external battery charged. Text and instant messages require less data than voice or video calls, which makes them the smarter choice when networks are strained.

This emergency activation also arrives after a meaningful commercial rollout. In a July 7 update, Entel said more than one million customers had Direct to Cell enabled and more than 170,000 people in Chile had already used the technology.

One million enabled customers does not mean one million people were connected through satellites during this storm. It means the emergency option was switched on inside an established rollout rather than introduced for the first time in the middle of a crisis.

The service can support SMS and certain compatible messaging applications on eligible devices and plans. Eligible phones remain far short of full-speed satellite broadband, yet the emergency layer is already operating at real consumer scale rather than sitting in a laboratory.

Direct to Cell has often been discussed as a threat to traditional carriers. Chile is showing the more immediate version of the idea: a satellite network and a mobile carrier working together so a terrestrial outage does not have to mean total silence.

Towers, fiber and the electrical grid will remain the backbone of everyday service. Satellite-to-phone coverage is the spare route, the one people hope they never need and are grateful to have when rain, snow or a power failure closes the normal path.

For families caught in this storm, the breakthrough is not a speed test or a flashy demo. It is the chance that one ordinary phone can still send the words that matter most: “I’m safe.”
