Tesla Must Fix Nearly 3 Million Cars in China Over Emergency Door-Release Risk

China has ordered one of Tesla’s largest safety actions yet, and the issue is not a motor, battery or software feature.

It is the emergency path out of the car.

Nearly 3 million Tesla vehicles in China are being recalled because the identification for their emergency mechanical door releases may be too hard to spot and operate. In a severe crash or another event that cuts low-voltage power, that can make it harder for occupants to escape and rescuers to get them out.

The fix combines old-fashioned labels with an over-the-air software update. A separate action will add camera-based driver monitoring to another 2.74 million China-built Model 3 and Model Y vehicles.

China’s State Administration for Market Regulation says the door-release recall begins September 25. It covers 973,156 China-built Model 3 sedans and 1,956,713 China-built Model Y crossovers, along with 35,590 imported Model 3, 8,328 imported Model X and 2,123 imported Model S vehicles.

That produces an exact total of 2,975,910 Teslas. The regulator says the emergency mechanical-release identification can be too similar in color to the surrounding interior trim, making it difficult to identify and use.

Tesla will install warning labels at no cost and send an over-the-air window-control update designed to lower the windows after a crash. Vehicles that already carry the specified warning labels will not need another label.

The window behavior matters because Tesla’s frameless doors normally lower the glass slightly before the door opens.

Tesla’s Model 3 owner’s manual tells occupants to use the powered button at the top of the interior handle during normal operation. The front mechanical release sits ahead of the window switches and is reserved for the loss-of-power case.

The distinction is easy to miss if a driver treats both controls as interchangeable. Tesla warns against using the mechanical release during normal operation because the powered button coordinates the door opening with the frameless window.

If low-voltage power disappears, that normal sequence is unavailable. The manual route then becomes the essential fallback, which is exactly why its location and purpose need to be obvious before an occupant is trying to find it under stress.

The release is not a convenience control. It is the hardware escape route when the ordinary button cannot do its job.

Tesla’s Model Y owner’s manual describes a similar front release and a rear procedure that involves removing a cover at the bottom of the door pocket and pulling a cable. Tesla warns that the window cannot automatically lower when the car has no power, so opening a front door mechanically can damage the window or trim.

The rear procedure demands more than pulling a familiar-looking handle. An occupant has to know where the pocket cover is, remove it and reach the cable beneath it.

That is a meaningful difference between everyday electronic operation and emergency escape.

Tesla’s documentation makes the hierarchy clear: powered controls are the normal path, mechanical controls are the backup, and the backup may have to work when the cabin’s electronics do not. The China recall focuses on making that last-resort route easier to recognize.

Those instructions are manageable when an owner has read the manual and has time. A dark cabin after a hard crash is a very different test.

The recall lands in a Chinese passenger-car market measured in the millions of registrations. Current industry data shows just how large and competitive that arena remains:

At that scale, even a seemingly modest design or labeling problem can put millions of cars into one action.

And Tesla is not the only automaker caught in China’s wider door-safety push.

CnEVPost reports that the broader recall campaign reaches more than 7 million vehicles across several manufacturers. Tesla’s two actions account for 5,716,552 vehicles when the door-release and driver-monitoring populations are combined.

China’s new national door-handle standard, GB 48001-2026, is scheduled to apply to newly approved vehicle models beginning January 1, 2027. Models that already hold approval get a transition period through January 1, 2029.

The rules are aimed at both sides of the door. New vehicles will need an exterior mechanical release in addition to any powered system, and interior emergency controls will have to be easier to identify.

That timeline gives automakers only months to bring newly approved designs into compliance, while existing approved models receive two additional years. The recall work begins before those deadlines, turning the coming design standard into an immediate owner-facing remedy.

The Associated Press connects the action to China’s broader restrictions on concealed exterior door handles, which are set to take effect next year. Flush and powered handles have become a signature design feature on many electric vehicles, but they have also drawn scrutiny when electrical damage complicates access after a crash.

Fatal accidents in China intensified that scrutiny. The standard still allows flush designs, provided a mechanical way to open the door remains available from outside and emergency operation is clearly identified inside.

For Tesla owners, the practical question is simple: Which recall applies to the car, and when does the remedy arrive?

The door-release action starts September 25 and includes imported Model S, Model 3 and Model X vehicles as well as China-built Model 3 and Model Y vehicles. Tesla is expected to contact affected owners, and China’s regulator also provides official recall-information channels.

The second Tesla action is already in effect. It covers 1,163,969 China-built Model 3 vehicles made from January 2, 2022 through April 29, 2026, plus 1,576,673 China-built Model Y vehicles made from January 1, 2022 through April 30, 2026.

China’s regulator says those vehicles rely on steering-wheel torque to monitor driver attention and may not adequately detect misuse. Tesla’s remedy adds in-cabin camera monitoring through an over-the-air update.

Neither action means every covered car has suffered the failure described. A recall population identifies vehicles that need the prescribed safeguard before the risk turns into the worst-case outcome.

Still, the door-release action exposes an important reality of modern car design: An emergency control is only useful if a frightened occupant or rescuer can find it immediately.

Tesla can deliver part of the remedy over the air. The label is the admission that some safety problems are solved best by making the physical answer impossible to miss.
