Tesla Opens Unsupervised Robotaxi Across the Entire Austin Metro

Tesla just took its biggest step yet in Austin.

On June 3, Tesla’s official Robotaxi account confirmed that unsupervised Robotaxi is now available across the entire Austin Metro area.

A small, carefully fenced operating zone has grown into a real-world footprint that covers the broader city.

The expansion lines up with what app users were already seeing before the official post. Jesse Richards documented the Robotaxi app allowing drop-off testing across a much larger area, and Tesla confirmed the broader map later that morning.

Not a Tesla App laid out how the rollout appeared inside the app:

The Austin rollout moved in two visible steps on Wednesday morning. Early app testing showed Tesla had more than doubled the unsupervised pickup and drop-off zone.

A short time later, the official Robotaxi account confirmed that unsupervised service was live across the greater Austin area, turning what had been a constrained operating zone into the broader Robotaxi map users could see in the app.

Tesla’s Austin service had been operating with a mix of supervised and fully autonomous rides. The new map made the unsupervised boundary match the main service area for the first time, according to app testing documented before the official confirmation.

For riders, the practical change is simple: more eligible locations can now be served by driverless Robotaxi trips instead of a narrower pocket of the city.

The expansion also lands in the middle of Tesla’s broader v14 and v15 autonomy push. Tesla has been increasing ride availability, adding night operations, and preparing larger neural-network upgrades while Austin remains the central real-world test bed.

A larger unsupervised footprint gives Tesla more operational data across more road types, more neighborhoods, and more edge cases.

TeslaNorth says the expanded map now reaches Pflugerville and Manor and opens up major highways, including I-35.

That is a different level of operating complexity than a small pocket of surface streets. Faster traffic, more route variety, and more real pickup points all make Austin a more serious proving ground.

Teslarati also noted that the broader map includes Giga Texas and Austin-Bergstrom airport. Those are exactly the kind of high-value endpoints that make a robotaxi network feel useful instead of experimental.

Drive Tesla put the expansion in fleet and coverage context:

The change is a major operating expansion rather than a cosmetic app update. Users began seeing far more drop-off points available inside the Robotaxi app, with the expanded area later confirmed by Tesla’s AI leadership.

The key point is that Tesla did not merely add a few streets; the unsupervised zone moved to the full Austin geofence.

The expansion also connects to the scale of Tesla’s active Robotaxi testing. Public fleet counts cited in the coverage showed dozens of verified unsupervised Robotaxis, with Austin still carrying the largest share.

That keeps the city at the center of Tesla’s real-world autonomy rollout while other U.S. markets remain on the roadmap.

The bigger Austin map is important because robotaxi progress is more than showing a car can complete one impressive route. The harder part is proving the system can operate repeatedly across a larger set of roads, pickup points, traffic patterns, and customer trips.

This expansion gives Tesla a much broader live proving ground.

Tesla VP of AI Ashok Elluswamy gave the same greater-Austin confirmation shortly after the official Robotaxi account posted.

One important clarification: this is an operating-area expansion, not a brand-new public launch for everyone in Austin.

Access still runs through Tesla’s app and invite structure where it applies. The geofence got much bigger, but the doors did not swing open to every rider overnight.

Even with that caveat, the direction is unmistakable. Tesla keeps widening the map, adding harder roads, and doing it with no one behind the wheel.

Austin is the proving ground, and the proving ground just got a whole lot bigger.
