Tesla Says FSD Cut Collisions 40% Across 160 Million Kilometers in Australia and New Zealand

Tesla has put a full year of real-world numbers behind Full Self-Driving in Australia and New Zealand, and the headline result is hard to miss: the company says cars using FSD Supervised recorded 40% fewer collisions than Teslas driven manually with active safety features.

The comparison covers more than 160 million kilometers of FSD driving between September 17, 2025, and September 16, 2026. That is a far more useful test than a carefully chosen demonstration route or one dramatic intervention clip.

It is also a company-produced dataset, not an independent audit. Both facts matter.

Tesla marked the anniversary with the scale of the local sample:

The baseline is important. Tesla did not compare FSD with an average car lacking modern safeguards.

It compared roughly 160 million FSD kilometers with about 2.4 billion kilometers driven manually in Teslas that still had active safety systems such as Automatic Emergency Braking and Forward Collision Warning enabled.

According to the regional scorecard, FSD Supervised logged one major or minor collision for every 1.78 million kilometers. The manually driven group logged one for every 1.07 million kilometers.

That is where Tesla’s 40% reduction comes from.

Not a Tesla App broke down the rest of the regional results. Tesla reported 66% fewer Automatic Emergency Braking activations with FSD engaged, along with 90% fewer harsh-braking events, 86% fewer harsh-acceleration events and 76% fewer harsh lateral movements.

Even horn use fell by 80%, from one event every 643 kilometers under manual control to one every 3,233 kilometers with FSD Supervised. The collision figure arrived alongside fewer emergency interventions and fewer abrupt maneuvers, not as one isolated line on the scorecard.

Tesla published the full scorecard in a second official post:

The cleanest reading is that Tesla now has a substantial right-hand-drive sample showing better measured outcomes when FSD was engaged. The wrong reading is that the company has proved autonomous driving is finished.

FSD remains supervised. The person behind the wheel is still responsible for watching the road and taking over when necessary.

Tesla explains in its Vehicle Safety Report that the company builds its comparisons from anonymous trip mileage and collision telemetry sent by the fleet. Tesla counts major and minor collision events and compares control modes across road classes, while acknowledging that connectivity or vehicle damage can affect data capture.

The methodology offers scale that police reports and voluntary owner surveys cannot match. It also remains Tesla measuring Tesla, using definitions and telemetry controlled by the company.

The Australia and New Zealand release does not identify the number of participating cars or split the 160 million kilometers between the two countries.

That makes the manual-Tesla baseline the most persuasive part of the release. Both sides of the comparison come from the same vehicle fleet and the same basic reporting pipeline, and the manual group retained Tesla’s active safety systems.

The market is already reacting to the wider safety case.

Zurich Australia announced this week that FSD Supervised would become a rating factor for eligible InsureMyTesla policies. Zurich called it an Australian industry first and said reduced risk associated with supervised self-driving could translate into more affordable coverage.

The insurer did not publish one universal discount. Pricing still depends on the individual policy, and Zurich’s release relied on Tesla data rather than a separate collision study.

Still, that decision pushes the argument beyond Tesla’s marketing. An insurer is now willing to put the claimed risk reduction into its underwriting.

One year ago, Australia and New Zealand were a crucial test of whether Tesla could move its system into right-hand-drive roads at scale. The first-year result now gives owners, regulators and insurers 160 million kilometers, a tougher internal baseline and fewer collisions per kilometer when the system was engaged.
