Tesla just posted a huge year-over-year gain in Germany, and the race with BYD is suddenly down to a rounding error.
Germany registered 2,932 new Teslas in October, a 290.9% jump from the same month last year. Through the first ten months of 2026, Tesla reached 47,742 registrations.
BYD finished October at 47,961.
That puts the Chinese automaker ahead by only 219 vehicles with two months left in the year.
Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority reported that the country’s total passenger-car market reached 254,492 registrations in October, up just 1.7% from a year earlier. That modest overall gain makes the much faster expansion inside the electric segment impossible to miss.
Battery-electric vehicles were the real growth engine. Germany registered 94,086 BEVs during the month, up 79.5%, giving fully electric cars a record 37.0% share of the market.
Tesla’s 2,932 registrations equaled 1.2% of the entire market. BYD recorded 5,173 vehicles for a 2.0% share, while Leapmotor reached 3,661 and 1.4%.
Those brand totals can include powertrains Tesla does not sell, so the comparison is not a pure BEV-only ranking.
The contrast is striking: Germany’s overall car market barely grew, while the battery-electric segment added nearly four-fifths year over year.
The first snapshot of the KBA release shows just how sharp Tesla’s annual rebound was:

The percentage is impressive, but it needs one important piece of context: October 2025 was a weak comparison month.
MarketScreener carries Reuters’ same-day report that Tesla’s January-through-October total climbed 206.1% from the same period last year. The report also places Germany inside a broader October recovery across several European markets after a prolonged soft stretch.
The German data show how quickly the competitive picture can change. Tesla’s annual growth rate was more than three times the wider market’s 79.5% BEV gain, yet the company still finished October behind BYD and Leapmotor in absolute registrations.
Even with that recovery, Tesla did not lead Germany in October. BYD’s 5,173 registrations were 2,241 higher, and Leapmotor also finished the month ahead of Tesla.
The year-to-date contest is much closer because Tesla entered October with a lead. BYD’s monthly result was enough to erase it, but only barely.
Tesla North puts October against Tesla’s extraordinary September, when 12,552 vehicles were registered in Germany. That means October fell sharply from the quarter-ending surge even while it looked spectacular against last year’s low base.
The same report calculates Tesla’s year-to-date share at roughly 1.9% and BYD’s lead at exactly 219 registrations. Germany’s electric market is expanding fast enough to create room for both companies, but the next two monthly reports will decide who ends 2026 ahead.
BYD’s October volume was nearly steady with its recent monthly pace, while Tesla’s total moved much more sharply around the quarter boundary. That makes November and December the real test of whether Tesla’s recovery can hold between quarter-end pushes.
Tesla also used Wednesday to make a longer-term statement about Germany.
The company officially opened its Berlin Tesla Engineering Center in Köpenick, bringing four engineering sites and 30 labs together near Giga Berlin:
Berlin Tesla Engineering Center opens today
From permit to operational in under a year, it brings 4 engineering sites onto 1 campus w/ 30 different labs in Köpenick, 30 minutes from Giga Berlin

Tesla says the center combines materials, powertrain, vehicle engineering and validation work under one roof. The practical goal is a shorter loop between engineers making changes and the factory trying to ramp them.
That investment matters more than a single monthly percentage. Tesla is not treating Germany as a market to serve from a distance; it is putting engineering work next to European production while the country’s EV market accelerates.
October’s 290.9% gain is the number that grabs attention. The 219-car gap is the number to watch.
BYD has the lead today. Tesla has two months to take it back.
