Tesla Model 3 Upgrade: Black Headliner and 16-Inch Display

Tesla Model 3 Upgrade Brings Black Headliner and 16-Inch QHD Display

Tesla is quietly preparing two major interior upgrades for the Model 3 that should excite anyone considering the electric sedan. Fresh coding discovered in Tesla’s European and Chinese configurators reveals the company is adding a premium black headliner option and a larger 16-inch QHD center display — bringing the Model 3 closer to the refreshed Model Y’s feature set.

Here’s what’s coming: Tesla Model 3 is adding a black headliner option (code: IN3PB), a new 16-inch QHD display matching Model Y Performance specs, changes spotted in EU and China configurator coding, likely coming to 2026 Model 3 Performance and Premium trims, and the display part is already available for $1,320 retrofit.

Tesla backend coding reveals a new interior designation: IN3PB (Interior 3 Premium Black). This maps to an Alcantara-style black headliner that’s been a fan request for years. Currently, Model 3 vehicles ship with a light-colored headliner that shows dirt easily and doesn’t match the premium feel of the rest of the cabin.

The second upgrade is more significant: a 16-inch QHD center display. This matches the screen found in the Model Y Performance (Juniper) and represents a notable jump from the current Model 3’s display. Higher resolution means sharper maps, crisper video, and better visibility for Full Self-Driving visualizations.

From Teslarati:

“According to coding found in the European and Chinese configurators, Tesla is planning to make two big upgrades: Black Headliner offerings and a new 16-inch QHD display, similar to that on the Model Y Performance.”

The coding points to 2026 model year vehicles, specifically Model 3 Performance and Premium variants. Tesla has been methodically upgrading the Model 3 since the Highland refresh launched, and these interior improvements continue that pattern.

What’s interesting is that Tesla’s EPC (Electronic Parts Catalog) already shows “Display_16_QHD” as an available component. Multiple 2026 builds are marked with green dots in Tesla’s system, suggesting production is imminent or already underway for these configurations.

Here’s something most buyers don’t know: you can already get that 16-inch QHD display in your refreshed Model 3 Highland. Tesla owners have discovered the part is plug-and-play compatible.

From BERKANT on X:

“The new 16″ QHD center display from Model Y Performance (Juniper) is now retrofittable — plug-and-play on refreshed Model 3 Highland & Model Y Juniper! Part #: 1946103-20-C. Tesla price: US$1,320.”

Owners who’ve completed the retrofit report it works perfectly after a simple scroll wheel reset. The only minor difference? Font size appears slightly smaller given the higher pixel density.

Tesla’s interior quality has been a consistent criticism, especially the light headliners that stain easily and look cheap. The black headliner option brings the Model 3 in line with premium competitors and matches what Tesla already offers on the Model Y Performance.

The 16-inch QHD display isn’t just about bragging rights. Higher resolution improves navigation clarity, FSD visualization detail, streaming video quality, and touch accuracy. For a vehicle competing against the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C-Class, these interior refinements close the luxury gap.

The big question for current Model 3 owners: will Tesla offer official retrofits? The display part is already available through service centers for $1,320 (plus installation), but Tesla hasn’t announced official retrofit programs for either upgrade.

Sawyer Merritt, Tesla community influencer, has already publicly asked Tesla about black headliner retrofits:

Tesla’s history suggests they’ll prioritize new vehicle production over retrofit services, but the parts availability means independent shops will likely offer the upgrades within weeks of official launch.

These Model 3 upgrades signal Tesla’s continued refinement of their mass-market sedan. While the Cybercab and robotaxi grab headlines, Tesla hasn’t forgotten about the vehicle that built the company’s mainstream success.

With competition heating up from the BMW i4, Polestar 2, and Hyundai Ioniq 6, Tesla is smart to keep improving the Model 3’s interior quality. The black headliner and larger display may seem like small changes, but they’re exactly the kind of premium touches that convince buyers to choose Tesla over established luxury brands.

Expect official announcements within weeks as Tesla begins listing these options in US configurators.
