Tesla Redesigned the Cybertruck’s Side Camera So Airflow Helps Keep Rain Off the Lens

Tesla has changed the shape of the Cybertruck’s side-repeater camera housing so moving air helps keep rainwater off the lens.

It is a small component change with a surprisingly important job. Cybertruck lead engineer Wes Morrill says the newer part creates an airflow disturbance around the camera while the truck is moving, improving the camera’s view without adding a washer, motor or other active hardware.

He also says the redesign carries no cost penalty.

The comparison shows the camera in the same general location with a reshaped outer housing. Extra contours around the lens opening create a different path for air and water along the surface.

TeslaNorth reported the change after Morrill published the comparison on September 8. The outlet identified the part as the Cybertruck side repeater and noted the engineer’s description of the improvement as passive geometry rather than an added cleaning system.

The side-by-side photograph places the newer housing on the left and the earlier part on the right, making the added contours around the lens opening visible.

The report also preserves two limits in Morrill’s disclosure. He described better water rejection while the truck is moving, not a lens that stays clear while parked, and he did not say the revised housing replaces regular cleaning.

No production date, vehicle identification range or retrofit plan accompanied the announcement. Owners can compare the visible housing shape, but Tesla has not published an official lookup showing which trucks left the factory with the newer part.

That distinction is the clever part. A sprayer needs fluid, a nozzle, plumbing and a control strategy.

Passive aerodynamic shaping does its work whenever enough air moves across the housing.

It should also avoid adding another component that can clog, freeze or fail. Tesla has not published a speed threshold or a test result showing how much water the revised housing rejects, so the real-world improvement cannot yet be quantified from outside the company.

The company’s endorsement matters because this is more than a cosmetic trim revision.

Side-repeater cameras help the vehicle see areas beside and behind it. They support the camera feed shown during lane changes and contribute visual information used by Tesla’s driver-assistance system.

Tesla warns Cybertruck owners that dirty cameras and environmental conditions such as rain can affect performance. If a camera becomes obstructed or blinded, the truck can display a warning on the touchscreen and some Self-Driving features may become unavailable.

The manual also says poor visibility from heavy rain, snow or hail can interfere with those systems. Tesla continues to tell drivers to stay alert and remain ready to take control; the housing redesign does not change that responsibility.

Tesla’s warning covers more than water on one repeater. Faded lane markings, darkness, direct sunlight, tunnels and highway dividers can all interfere with what the cameras see, and the company says its list is not exhaustive.

The new housing therefore improves one physical input without changing the operating limits around the whole camera system. A clearer side lens can preserve a better view in rain, but it cannot make every road or weather condition visible.

The updated part attacks one narrow problem before software ever has to interpret the image: water sitting directly on the lens.

Tesla Service says every camera lens must remain clean and free of obstruction, condensation and damage. Its current guidance tells owners to remove dirt or debris with water and a microfiber cloth and to clean lenses at least weekly during wet weather.

That guidance still stands. Airflow can help move rainwater while the Cybertruck is traveling, but it will not remove dried road salt, mud, oil or damage.

It also cannot solve condensation inside an enclosure.

Tesla has not said when the revised repeater entered production, which Cybertrucks already carry it or whether owners of earlier trucks will be offered the housing as a retrofit. Morrill’s image confirms that two physical versions exist, but not the production cutoff between them.

Even with those open questions, the update is a useful example of engineering by subtraction.

Tesla did not bolt on another cleaning system. It reshaped a part already on the truck and used the air rushing past it to do more work.

For a camera-dependent vehicle, a clearer lens is not a minor detail. If the new housing performs as described, one inexpensive piece of plastic could mean fewer rain-obscured views and fewer moments when the Cybertruck has to tell its driver that a camera cannot see.
