Tesla Answers France’s FSD Safety Concerns With 195,000 Kilometers of Testing

Tesla has put a new number behind its push to bring FSD (Supervised) to France: 195,000 kilometers of local testing without what the company calls a notable incident.

The timing is pointed.

France publicly opposed the software in its current form less than two weeks ago, citing safety concerns. Tesla is now answering with French-road data, video from the test program and an invitation for the public to experience the system from the passenger seat.

More than 60 percent of the testing took place on urban and rural roads, according to Tesla Europe. That matters because narrow streets, roundabouts, changing speed limits and mixed traffic demand much more than a predictable highway cruise.

The company paired the numbers with footage of FSD navigating French roads and a direct link to its local ride-along program.

Tesla is inviting people in France to experience FSD (Supervised) from the passenger seat. The event page makes the public demonstration part of the regulatory argument: do not judge the system only through competing political claims—watch it operate on the roads where approval is being debated.

The ride-along is not a customer rollout. A trained Tesla driver remains responsible for the car, and passengers are seeing a supervised driver-assistance system rather than an autonomous vehicle.

Still, opening the doors is a confident move. It gives French officials, owners and skeptics a chance to see how the current European software handles the exact road environment at the center of the dispute.

The official page is built around a passenger-seat experience in France rather than a generic software explainer. That keeps the demonstration inside supervised operation while letting people compare Tesla’s safety claims with behavior they can watch on local roads.

Reuters reported on July 23 that French transport minister Philippe Tabarot opposed FSD in its current form because France did not believe the safety tradeoffs were sufficient for authorization. He specifically pointed to concerns about speeding and driver inattention.

France’s position was the first public rejection by an EU government of the Dutch-led effort to expand approval across the bloc. Tabarot said other countries shared the concerns, although he did not identify them, and France continued technical discussions with the Netherlands and other member states.

The regulatory map is already split. The Netherlands granted provisional approval in April, and Belgium, Denmark, Estonia and Lithuania followed ahead of a possible EU-wide vote.

Tesla’s new France number directly addresses the local part of that argument. It says the system has faced nearly 121,200 miles of French roads, most of them away from easy highway conditions, without a notable incident in Tesla’s test record.

That is a company disclosure, not an independent accident database. Tesla has not defined “notable incident” in the post or published a trip-by-trip log, so the number deserves to be read alongside the regulator’s independent work.

RDW, the Dutch vehicle authority, says it did much more than accept Tesla’s internal analysis. Its data experts reviewed whether Tesla’s European data was complete, verifiable and accurate, then independently examined the company’s statistical work.

The regulator also ran more than 3,000 hours of its own testing across over 1,000 test runs. Those drives covered tracks and public roads, complex urban traffic, varied road types and extreme weather, using data from 1.8 million FSD kilometers in Europe.

After approval, RDW increased the required reporting frequency from yearly to monthly. It said nearly 40,000 equipped Teslas had driven about 24 million kilometers in the Netherlands without a relevant incident by June 17.

RDW concluded that FSD (Supervised) met the applicable requirements for use in the Netherlands. It also kept the boundary crystal clear: the system assists the driver, the driver remains responsible, and the car is not self-driving.

France is entitled to demand hard safety evidence before allowing a major new driving technology onto public roads. But the debate now has more than promises on one side and caution on the other.

Tesla has put 195,000 kilometers of French testing on the table. RDW has supplied a much larger independently reviewed European record, plus continuing monthly oversight after deployment.

The next move belongs to French and European regulators. They should press for every definition and every underlying number they need—but they should also judge the system now being demonstrated, not an older version frozen in time.

For Tesla owners still waiting, the fresh footage and open ride-alongs make one thing clear: FSD in France is no longer a distant concept. It is already driving the roads; the permission slip is the part still parked.
