Tesla Starts Enabling Cybertruck and Powerwall 3 to Back Up a Home Together

Tesla has started enabling one of Cybertruck’s most useful missing features: working with a Powerwall 3 to keep the same home running during an outage.

Until now, owners with both products could not use them as one coordinated backup system. Cybertruck could power a home through Powershare, and Powerwall could back up the house, but the two batteries were not ready to share the job.

Tesla’s official Cybertruck account says that gap is closing now.

The company says a plugged-in Cybertruck can extend a Powerwall 3 home’s backup duration by more than three days. It describes the truck’s available energy as the equivalent of adding nine Powerwalls:

Tesla Powershare explains the basic architecture. Cybertruck can send up to 11.5 kW of continuous power into a home, while its much larger vehicle battery provides the energy reserve that can stretch through a multi-day outage.

In a Powerwall home, Tesla says the truck connects through a Wall Connector or Universal Wall Connector. A separate Powershare Gateway is not required, because the Powerwall installation already includes the equipment that isolates the home from the utility grid and manages backup operation.

The setup does far more than run an extension cord from the truck to a refrigerator. The house has to disconnect safely from the grid before Cybertruck can energize its circuits.

Powerwall and Cybertruck then have to coordinate their roles and keep voltage and frequency stable while utility power is unavailable.

Tesla’s Powershare explainer describes how the two products divide the work. Powerwall remains the home’s stationary battery and can support demanding equipment, while the plugged-in Cybertruck adds a much larger pool of stored energy.

If the truck leaves the driveway, Powerwall continues backing up the house on its own. When the truck is connected, the system can draw on its battery above the discharge limit chosen by the owner.

Tesla said in August that the combination would require no additional equipment for a compatible Powerwall installation. The new announcement moves that plan from a promised integration to a feature Tesla says is now becoming available for Powerwall 3.

The same explainer puts the truck’s role in practical terms. A fully charged Cybertruck can supply a typical home for more than three days at Tesla’s assumed 30 kWh of daily consumption, while an owner can preserve driving range by setting a higher discharge floor.

Solar changes the equation again. If the home can produce enough during daylight, it can support household loads and replenish stored energy, stretching the system beyond the truck-only estimate.

Tesla Powerwall lists 13.5 kWh of energy in one Powerwall 3 and 11.5 kW of continuous backup power. Its current product page now identifies Powershare-capable vehicles as another way to add energy capacity to a home system.

Energy and power are not the same thing. Pairing the truck with Powerwall 3 gives the home far more stored energy to draw from, but it does not mean every appliance can run without limits or that the outputs of both products simply stack into one giant power rating.

Actual backup time will depend on the home’s load, the Cybertruck’s starting charge, the owner’s discharge limit and whether solar can replenish either battery during the outage. Air conditioning, electric heat, water heaters and other large loads can consume the reserve much faster than lights, refrigeration and internet equipment.

Tesla’s Cybertruck owner’s manual says Powershare begins supplying the home automatically when the grid fails, provided the truck is connected and its battery remains above the owner’s chosen discharge limit.

The Tesla app shows the available energy and lets the owner adjust that limit. It also includes a Go Off-Grid control for testing the system before a real outage rather than discovering a configuration problem in the middle of one.

The manual lists compatible vehicle firmware, the Tesla app and the required home equipment as prerequisites. It warns that the house may briefly lose power while Cybertruck prepares to take over after the utility feed drops.

Cybertruck stops supplying the home when its battery reaches the owner’s discharge limit or the truck is disconnected. Those controls preserve a chosen amount of driving range instead of allowing home backup to empty the vehicle automatically.

The first release is limited to Powerwall 3. Owners with earlier Tesla home batteries still have to wait, but Tesla says that wait now has a defined direction:

Tesla did not give an exact date for Powerwall 2+ support. The company also has several public support pages that still carry older “coming soon” language, so availability may roll out by software version and system configuration rather than appearing for every eligible owner at once.

For Powerwall 3 owners, though, this is the integration Cybertruck’s enormous battery has been waiting for.

A home battery can react instantly and keep critical equipment steady. The truck can bring days of additional energy.

Making them cooperate turns two expensive Tesla products into a stronger system than either one is alone.
