Tesla Reveals Model Y L Upgrades That Go Far Beyond a Bigger Cabin

The Tesla Model Y L was already easy to understand as the bigger, six-seat Model Y.

Now Tesla has shown that the stretch job is only part of the story.

At a media event in Los Angeles, the company laid out a set of practical upgrades aimed at making all three rows more comfortable—especially when the weather turns hot.

There is a smarter climate-control screen, major changes to thermal efficiency, improved roof glass and PowerShare capability for North American buyers.

The most obvious change appears right on the center display. A vertical row of icons lets the front passenger jump directly between the climate settings for the first, second and third rows.

The interface is simple, but it makes sense in a vehicle built around a real third row rather than an occasional pair of seats tucked under the hatch.

Teslarati reports that the demonstration took place at Tesla’s Diner on Santa Monica Boulevard. The event also confirmed that North American Model Y L vehicles will support PowerShare with up to 11.5 kilowatts of home output when paired with a Powerwall 3.

The Launch Series includes one year of Full Self-Driving (Supervised), one year of Supercharging and one year of Premium Connectivity. Tesla also said the initial U.S. allocation was nearly sold out.

The less visible changes may prove more important during everyday driving.

Tesla’s event material claims up to 15 percent faster cabin cooling and up to 23 percent better thermal efficiency in hot weather. The company says that efficiency improvement can recover seven miles of real-world range, with another 10 miles gained after 25 minutes of Supercharging in hot conditions.

The glass roof is part of the work. Tesla claims the new glass reflects up to eight times more solar energy and cuts the solar energy entering the cabin by as much as 30 percent compared with model-year 2024 and earlier Model Y vehicles.

Those numbers still need independent testing. But the engineering target is clear: make a larger cabin easier to cool without forcing the battery and HVAC system to work harder than necessary.

Electrive explains that the Model Y L adds roughly six inches to the standard Model Y’s wheelbase and about seven inches to its overall length. The result is a 2+2+2 cabin with second-row captain’s chairs and a third row designed for more than emergency use.

The U.S. version is built at Gigafactory Texas and launched as a Premium all-wheel-drive model. Tesla rates it for 325 miles of EPA range on the standard 19-inch wheels and a 4.4-second run from zero to 60 mph.

That makes the Model Y L much more than a seven-seat checkbox. Tesla has turned it into the family-sized bridge between the standard Model Y and the discontinued Model X.

MotorTrend found that the comparison with the Model X is surprisingly close. The Model Y L is only 2.7 inches shorter overall and rides on a wheelbase three inches longer. Both use a six-passenger 2+2+2 layout, and their passenger measurements are closer than the different body shapes suggest.

The Model Y L gives up some front-trunk capacity, but it matches the former Model X at 14.8 cubic feet behind the third row. Fold that row and the newer vehicle edges ahead with 38 cubic feet of cargo room.

MotorTrend lists the Model Y L Premium Launch Series at $63,630 including destination and order fees, with customer deliveries expected later this year. It is not a bargain Model Y.

It is Tesla’s attempt to keep families who need real three-row space inside the brand.

That context makes the new climate work feel less like a collection of minor upgrades.

A longer cabin means more glass, more air and more passenger zones to cool. Tesla stretched the wheelbase, then reworked how heat enters the vehicle.

The HVAC system has to move that heat out efficiently, while the new controls give passengers direct access to each row.

PowerShare adds another useful dimension. With the required Powerwall 3 hardware, the Model Y L can become part of a home’s backup-power setup instead of serving only as transportation.

The Model Y L still has plenty to prove once customer deliveries begin. Tesla’s cooling and range claims need real-world testing, and buyers will decide whether the price makes sense next to other three-row electric SUVs.

But the Los Angeles event answered an important question.

Tesla did not build the Model Y L by adding six inches and hoping families would ignore everything else. It treated the bigger cabin like a new engineering problem—and gave the vehicle a much stronger reason to exist.
