Tesla is about to make a major move in one of the world’s biggest and most challenging car markets. Reports confirmed this week that the Tesla Model Y L, a six-seat, three-row variant of the world’s best-selling EV, could launch in India as early as April 22nd.
This is a big deal. India has been the white whale for Tesla for years. Sky-high import tariffs, a price-sensitive buyer base, and limited charging infrastructure kept the company on the sidelines for the better part of a decade. Tesla finally entered the market in July 2025, but the initial rollout was quiet and focused on luxury segments. Demand was tepid at best.
Now Tesla is changing the playbook. Instead of trying to force-fit a premium product into a market that wasn’t ready for it, the company is bringing a vehicle that actually makes sense for Indian families: the Model Y L, with a 2+2+2 seating layout and captain’s chairs in the second row.

The numbers behind the Model Y L tell the story of a vehicle built for practicality. It stretches to 4,976 mm in length, about 179 mm longer than the standard Model Y. The wheelbase grows by 150 mm to 3,040 mm, giving the third row actual usable legroom.
Teslarati laid out the full context:
The six-seater variant aims to broaden appeal beyond early luxury adopters by addressing practical family needs.
Tesla finally debuted in July 2025 with a quiet rollout focused on luxury segments.
That quiet debut didn’t exactly set the market on fire. Between September and December 2025, only 217 Tesla vehicles were registered in India. The company had received roughly 600 initial orders but scaled back after demand fell short of expectations. Discounts of up to 200,000 rupees followed by January.
Here’s the thing, though. Tesla isn’t giving up on India. They’re adapting. The Model Y L is already available in 11 markets including China, Australia, and several Southeast Asian countries, having launched in China back in August 2025 at approximately $47,200.
Tesla prepares to introduce a larger, three-row Model Y variant in India, targeting premium family EV buyers with more space and comfort.

Eletric-Vehicles.com added more detail on the vehicle’s specifications:
The six-seat SUV features a 2+2+2 seating arrangement with captain’s chairs in the second row. It measures 4,976 mm in length, approximately 179 mm longer than the standard version, with a wheelbase extended by 150 mm to 3,040 mm.
India is the world’s third-largest car market and one of its fastest-growing EV segments. If Tesla can crack the code with a more practical, family-friendly offering, it opens the door to a customer base that most Western automakers have struggled to reach. The Model Y L, manufactured at Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory, is the right vehicle at the right time.
With a reported April 22nd launch window, we could have official confirmation within days. India might finally become a real growth story for Tesla.
