Tesla Confirms FSD Subscription Model — Outright Purchase Ending Soon
Tesla is making a major shift in how it sells Full Self-Driving, and the change is happening faster than many expected.
Elon Musk announced on X that Tesla will transition FSD to a subscription-only model for Model 3 and Model Y after February 14, discontinuing the option to purchase the software outright. The move represents a fundamental change in Tesla’s FSD monetization strategy.
Tesla will stop selling FSD after Feb 14.
FSD will only be available as a monthly subscription thereafter.

The shift to subscription means FSD will be available for $99 per month rather than the current $8,000 one-time purchase. For Tesla, this creates recurring revenue. For buyers, it lowers the barrier to entry.
From Electrek:
Tesla’s transition to subscription-only FSD for Model 3 and Y represents a strategic pivot toward recurring revenue. The $99 monthly price point makes the technology accessible to buyers who couldn’t afford the $8,000 upfront cost, while potentially generating more revenue over the vehicle’s lifetime.
The change affects new orders going forward. Existing FSD purchases remain valid, and Model S and X buyers can still purchase FSD outright as part of the Luxe Package—for now.
Industry analyst Sawyer Merritt noted the updated terms:
Tesla's updated language on their website about free FSD transfers:
"To be eligible for this offer, you must: Have your new Tesla vehicle delivered between April 24, 2025 and March 31, 2026." pic.twitter.com/c95k5J09PE

Tesla’s updated language specifies that to be eligible for free FSD transfers, vehicles must be delivered between April 24, 2025 and March 31, 2026. This creates a narrow window for buyers who want to lock in the purchase option.
From TeslaOracle:
Tesla FSD outright purchase is still available as part of the 2026 Tesla Model S and X Luxe Package. So, if you plan to buy a Model S or X, you only have a few months left. The exciting part is that you get Full Self-Driving at no extra cost with the Luxe Package.
The subscription model aligns with Tesla’s broader software strategy. Rather than one-time purchases, the company is building recurring revenue streams that continue throughout the vehicle’s life.
For Tesla, the math is compelling. At $99 per month, a typical owner paying for 5 years would generate nearly $6,000 in revenue—approaching the outright purchase price, but with ongoing monthly payments that smooth revenue recognition.
The move also addresses a criticism of FSD: that buyers were paying for promises of future capability. With subscription, owners only pay when they want the feature active.
Tesla is betting that subscription FSD will accelerate adoption while building a sustainable revenue stream that could eventually exceed vehicle sales margins.
The outright purchase window is closing. After February 14, FSD becomes monthly forever.
