BMW X5 Owner Borrowed a Tesla Model Y for Three Weeks and Put His BMW Up for Sale

Tesla’s Full Self-Driving technology doesn’t need a sales pitch. Sometimes all it takes is three weeks behind the wheel of a 2026 Tesla Model Y.

A BMW X5 owner recently borrowed his friend’s Model Y while the friend was traveling overseas. He had never driven an electric car before. By the time the keys went back, his mind was made up. The BMW was going on the market.

This kind of story keeps showing up in the Tesla community. Someone finally tries FSD, and suddenly their old car doesn’t feel the same anymore.

Take a look:

Three weeks. That’s all it took for a lifelong BMW driver to flip the switch. FSD and the overall ownership experience made the decision for him.

And it’s not just individual drivers taking notice. Tesla’s self-driving technology is now powering a robotaxi service that launched in Dallas and Houston this week. Tesla Oracle reported today that Tesla’s rides are coming in at a fraction of what Waymo charges:

An unsupervised Tesla Robotaxi ride in Dallas cost just $6.15 for a 2.25-mile, seven-minute trip. Waymo quoted $13.93 for the same route, making Tesla’s fare 56% cheaper.

When your self-driving tech is good enough to run a driverless fleet at half the competitor’s price, it’s no wonder a BMW owner got hooked after three weeks of living with it.

Electric Vehicles dug into the pricing breakdown and shared Elon Musk’s take on the competition:

Tesla’s current robotaxi pricing follows a formula of $3.00 base fare plus $1.40 per mile. Waymo charges a base fare between $5.37 and $9.52 with per-mile rates of $1.66 to $2.50. Musk has been direct about the gap, saying, “Waymo never really had a chance against Tesla, which will be obvious in hindsight.”

Tesla didn’t win this BMW owner over with advertising. FSD did the talking. And with robotaxi now live in four U.S. cities and Q1 earnings dropping this Tuesday, the momentum is only building.
